Effective PowerPoint Presentations

Same old…same old…borrrrring slide show. Screen after screen of bulleted information – or worse yet, a blank screen with line by line entries that are timed an interminable five seconds apart. The usual, yes. But is this the best technology can offer???

Most of the impact of a personal exchange of information is in the non verbals – the pace of delivery, your tone of voice, gesture and body language. The same is true for electronic exchanges as well. Space, pictures and large print “speak” to an audience and generate interest; a page covered with tiny font and unintelligible diagrams communicate as well. Which message do YOU want to send???

You are the real product in any presentation. The rapport you develop is the underlying key to any consideration of the ideas you present. So many people take refuge in reading the slides and they forget about the eye contact that creates a relationship with an audience. If the printed words were all that mattered, then you could stay in your office and send a report instead! An effective PowerPoint presentation enlightens and holds attention, so that the speaker can expand on the issues being considered. It does not serve as a substitute for the presenter.

Learn the behaviors that encourage the formation of a relationship with an audience and the kind of visuals that truly “aid” and not put an audience to sleep.
