Public Speaking

The sweating palms. The racing heart. The butterflies in your stomach.

Do all these walk with you as you approach a podium to give a talk?

Do you stand up to introduce yourself and feel your throat tighten and your breath reduced to short spurts that almost prevent you from vocalizing?

Does your mind go blank when you look at the expectant faces of a waiting audience?

These are all the symptoms of one of the most common fears of people across the world – the fear of speaking in public. Public speaking ranks down there with death and taxes as being among the “least favorite” experiences people have to face. So much of the discomfort lies in the belief that others are harsh judges. Speakers shrink before an audience that they perceive as critics with high expectations.

It doesn’t have to be that way. Mental and emotional preparation and speech rehearsal can turn anyone’s discomfort into confidence and assurance. Once you have mastered the basics of effective speaking, you are armed with the tools of success and fear has no more power to control you. The British philosopher, Francis Bacon, said that “Knowledge is Power.” Acquiring the knowledge needed to become a capable public speaker produces the power that prepares you for all the eventualities that a speaking encounter might bring.
